JRobles:
What you are describing is actually two separate functions.
(1) pin punch
(2) transfer labor levels at the clock using the # key.

I will describe the steps for pinning here, since it’s easier. Transfers at the clock are more involved. I’ll write up a new blog post for that.

Pin Punching
Allows employees to used * key to punch at the clock without using a badge. They utilize the keypad and type in their badge number instead of swiping. You can enable this feature with Procedure 5 Step 1 Value 1. A value of 0 turns this feature off.

Cmd 90 Proc 5 Step 1 Value 1 Turns on pinning
Cmd 90 Proc 5 Step 1 Value 0 Turns off pinning

Hi,
We have a 460 series time clock connected via RS485 to a Windows 98 computer with Kronos Timekeeper software. the computer is starting to fail and we decided to install the software on a windows XP machine and transfer all the data files which seemed to work fine. after a reboot of the computer, the program fails to communicate with the hardware and freezes. i left the default baudrate of 9600 on the settings. I tried using a different RS485 to usb dongle and it seems to communicate but it throws and “Invalid Character” error message.
do you have any idea of how to correct this issue?

Thanks!

Joe have you had any experience with the SD cards on the InTouch models? I have had three fail on hardware that is only 3 months old. Since warranty is only 60 days and we don’t carry maintenance this is a big pain point to spend thousands of dollars on something only to have it break and not be a part that can be ordered separate. The whole clock is integrated, no more separate screen purchases either. I read a technote on repairing but they are not nearly as friendly as your step by step guides.

We use the 4500 Kronos clocks and we consistently have to be unplugging and repluging so it records employee punches. What is wrong with the clocks?

Cris,
The clock is online briefly, then going offline. Are they assigned to static IP addresses? Is it possible that something else (like a printer or another clock) is using the same IP address in your network? To check, take the clock offline and then ping its IP address to make sure nothing else is hitting it. Multiple clocks sharing the same password (device ID) causes issues too.

Bess,
It sounds like you may have gotten caught up in a known issue with SD cards that was logged by Kronos. It exists in some InTouch clocks manufactured between May 2013 through January 2016. Clocks shipped after 1/17/16 are not supposed to have this issue.
Check with Kronos Global Support, even if you don’t have a contract. “Customers with no maintenance contract on their InTouch time clocks will have the option of purchasing the SD card for $30 per card to address the issue.”

Hi Gabriel,

RS-485 is the Kronos Remote Bar Code Reader Kit.
Baud rate being a factor tells us you are communicating by modem.
Once upon a time, modems were always measured in “baud,” a telecom measurement of electrical signal cycles. Since each baud meant moving one bit through the line, baud and “bps” (bits per second) meant the same thing. Then designers figured out how to put through a couple of bits on each cycle, and baud was no longer equal to bps.
So it appears there is a configuration problem with the modem on the new machine. Unfortunately, these can be very frustrating and arcane to fix. First off, yes, I would try changing the baud rate to 2400 and see if that helps anything.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\CLASS\MODEM in the registry can be a useful place to look around.
I once had this laptop that would detect the modem TWICE, no matter what I tried. Then when you used it, sometimes you got the error message “port already in use.” What fixed it was going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\CLASS\MODEM. There were two keys with the same values. Deleted one, removed the modem from control panel, and voila.
If none of that helps, just google your specific modem and you may find a lot of other tips.
Good luck

Shawn,
Hardware Report is available from maintenance mode. That will tell you if the clock thinks a biometric verification device (fingerprint reader) is attached.
If employees have already been enrolled with fingerprints, the following options can be used:
– Biometric Verify in maintenance mode allows you to test the employee’s actual fingerprint against what is stored in the clock.
– Emp Enroll Count and Non-enrolled Emps in maintenance mode tell how many employees are enrolled / not enrolled with fingerprints.

It sounds an the employee is using the Review Punches softkey, and the result is coming back one hour off.
Does this only happen on one clock? Do all other clocks perform Review Punches correctly?
Do all employees see their Review Punches time as one hour off, or is this happening for just one employee?

Any clock part number from 8602800-500 through -999 will be fine.
If the clock part number is below 8602800-500, it will not support device-initiated communications (most places don’t use this).

Are these ADP clocks (blue), or Kronos clocks (red)? Kronos clocks won’t communicate with ADP.

John B.,

I believe the error you are getting might be
“Comm Driver Error Code -78; Device not responding”

You should verify that the same comm parameters are on the devices and in Device Manager.
Other settings to look at:
Choose a lower baud rate
Increase the intermessage delay
Increase the message begin timeout

Jolene,

To review the bell schedule in the clock use Command 67. The first item that shows up tells you how many bells are programmed and how long until the next bell. Then hit Enter or Next to go through each bell.
To delete the entire bell schedule table use Command 66.

Joe,

Here is one way to determine the clock firmware version.
From Workforce:
Device Manager tab → Devices → Click checkbox next to clock → Troubleshooting → View Device Registration
The resulting document holds key information, including “release”, which is the firmware version.

Kourosh,

This is regarding the “Error Reading Update File” message being generated from TKC 4.3’s Data Services application. The error #499 is not stating anything about invalid data, which we typically see, but rather that the file cannot be read.
The file formats and extensions supported by Data Services are:
Lotus 1-2-3, .WK1
Microsoft Excel, .XLS
Quattro Pro, .WQ1
Text, .CSV
I am thinking that because your file is named with a “.dat” extension, it is not being recognized.

Keith,
Unknown Employee does not indicate the badge is not valid; it indicates the employee is not a home employee on that clock. You were on the right track with procedure 4 step 1. The number there should be as high or higher than the amount of employees you are downloading to the clock. Storage for punch data is not an issue so long as punches get collected regularly. When a punch is collected, its data is no longer in the clock.

Tonya,
If you do not have an “M” badge, type 6178903232 to get into maintenance mode.
Command 83 will set date and time.

John,
If you go to Device Manager -> Device Groups -> (select a group) -> Troubleshooting -> Retrieve Device Configuration Data it will show all the XML parameter files available (getAllCommentCodes.xml, getAllPayCodes.xml, getAllDeviceWorkRules.xml, etc.)

Amy,
It may be possible that the Device Manager settings for your device-initiated clock group are set differently than the server-initiated clock group.
To check on this, go to Setup > Device Manager Setup > Device Communication Settings. Review items in there such as net check interval and interval for automatic data collection.
Also keep in mind that if you have a large number of clocks, it helps to have a dedicated device manager server.
You can go in and disable Kronos Browser access to a clock. This is one of several options than can be flipped on and off like telnet and FTP access.
If you don’t recall doing that, something is fishy with communications here. I recommend going back to one of those clocks and verifying that things are set up correctly. Go to Communication Settings > General Communication > Tap Device-Initiated > go through and verify the correct values for the server.
